When most people picture Mexico, they imagine white-sand beaches, swim-up bars, and colorful cocktails. And while those are wonderful, they’re just the beginning. Beyond the shoreline lies the real Mexico, a place of ancient ruins, beautiful cities, bustling markets, and traditions that have been alive for centuries. The Yucatán Peninsula is where history, culture, and natural beauty come together, and exploring it means trading poolside loungers for ruins, markets, and experiences that leave you with stories to tell.

This winter, I’m heading beyond the beaches I know so well to explore the Yucatán Peninsula for the first time, and I’d love for you to come along. Together, we’ll experience places that go far beyond the all-inclusive resorts, discovering history, culture, and hidden corners of Mexico that many travelers never see. Here’s what’s on the itinerary:

Isla Holbox - Laid-back Paradise

Holbox has been calling my name for years. From what I’ve heard, it’s all about slowing down, golf carts

instead of cars, sandy streets, and sunsets that people rave about as the best in Mexico. The beaches are wide, soft, and blissfully uncrowded, which sounds like heaven compared to the Riviera Maya’s busier stretches. I can’t wait to wander the island barefoot, soak in the views, and of course, track down that famous lobster pizza (purely for research, of course).

Mérida - The Cultural Capital

Mérida is often called the “White City” and is known as the cultural heart of the Yucatán. I’ve read about its colonial architecture, bustling markets, and incredible Yucatecan cuisine. Cochinita pibil is on my must-eat list! In the evenings, the city comes alive with music and dancing, and I can’t wait to see what it’s like to experience that energy in person.

What makes Mérida especially appealing is its welcoming vibe; it’s a mix of historic charm and modern city life, with locals proud to share their traditions. Many travelers also say it feels safe and easy to explore, which makes it the perfect base for discovering more of the Yucatán.

Izamal - The Yellow City

Izamal looks like something out of a dream. Nearly every building in town is painted golden yellow, creating such a unique and beautiful atmosphere. The Franciscan convent built on Mayan ruins is one of the highlights I can’t wait to visit. From everything I’ve seen, Izamal doesn’t get the big crowds, which makes it feel like a hidden treasure waiting to be explored.

Fun fact: Izamal is especially known for street food! Many travelers say the best way to eat here is at the open-air market, where vendors serve Yucatecan classics like panuchos, salbutes, and cochinita pibil fresh and at unbeatable prices. Let’s just say I’ll be packing stretchy pants for this stop.

Chichén Itzá - Wonder of the World

I’ve been to Mexico many times, but somehow, I’ve never made it to Chichén Itzá, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. That changes this winter! Standing before El Castillo pyramid will be a bucket-list moment, but I’m just as excited to explore the ball court, temples, and carvings that bring the Mayan world to life.

Of course, being such a famous site, there will be lots of visitors, that’s just part of the experience. What I’m most excited about, though, is seeing it with a guide who can bring the history to life. Photos are great, but standing there in person, hearing the stories and little details you’d never know otherwise, is what will make this feel truly unforgettable.

Tulum - Where History Meets the Sea

Our journey ends in Tulum, where the Mayan ruins overlook the Caribbean Sea. I’ve been lucky enough to visit the ruins a couple of times already, and they never lose their magic. There’s just something about this place that keeps calling me back, maybe I was a Mayan goddess in another life, haha!

This time, I’m especially excited to pair that history with something new: checking out Tulum’s famous beach clubs and soaking in its boho-chic vibe. From trendy cafés and boutique shops to art-filled streets, Tulum has a modern, laid-back energy that blends perfectly with its ancient roots.

Extend Your Stay - Flop & Drop at the Beach

After days of exploring, you might be ready for a little “flop and drop” at the beach. Luckily, I know the all-inclusives in Cancun and the Riviera Maya inside and out. Whether you’re dreaming of a romantic adults-only escape, a fun family resort, or a spa-focused luxury stay, I’ll help you find the perfect spot to kick back and relax before heading home.

Travel with Me This Winter

This winter, I’ll be leading a small guided group tour through the Yucatán, visiting Holbox, Mérida, Izamal, Chichén Itzá, and ending in Tulum. Even though I’ve been to Mexico many times, this will be my first chance to explore these amazing spots, and I’d love to discover them with you.
